September and October are some of the best months to get outside and experience what our communities have to offer. There are street fairs, food festivals, carnivals, Oktoberfest celebrations, family events, live music, craft vendors, and plenty of activities for kids.

I grew up in Paterson and have spent more than 15 years working in real estate throughout North Jersey. One thing I have learned is that choosing where to live is about much more than finding the right house.

Local parks, downtown areas, restaurants, festivals, schools, transportation, and weekend activities all play a role in how a town feels.

Bergen County Fall Harvest Festival in Ridgefield Park

The Bergen County Fall Harvest Festival is one of the biggest family events happening this weekend.

The three-day festival runs September 18 through September 20 at Overpeck County Park, 199 Challenger Road in Ridgefield Park.

Admission and parking are free.

This is a great example of why there is more to Bergen County than simply being close to New York City.

Community events, parks, recreation, shopping, and different downtown areas are all part of what attracts people to the county.

If you are exploring Bergen County as a place to live, spend some time in the surrounding neighborhoods before or after the festival.

Parsippany Fall Festival Fair

Parsippany's Fall Festival Fair takes place Saturday, September 19 from noon to 5 PM at Smith Field Park along Route 46 East.

Admission is free.

The festival includes live music, craft vendors, food trucks, community organizations, children's activities, and a beer area.

There is also expected to be college football shown on a large outdoor screen.

Parsippany is one of those communities where you can quickly see why Morris County attracts buyers looking for more suburban space while still wanting convenient access to major highways and employment centers.

A community event gives you a chance to experience the area when residents are actually out enjoying it.

Fall Family Festival in Roseland

The Essex County Environmental Center hosts its Fall Family Festival on Sunday, September 20 from 11 AM to 3 PM.

The event takes place at 621 Eagle Rock Avenue in Roseland.

Admission is free, although some individual activities may have an additional cost.

Families can enjoy nature-themed games, crafts, live animals, outdoor activities, canoeing, and other fall attractions.

If you have younger children and want an outdoor event that is more educational than a traditional carnival, this could be a good choice.

Mountain Creek Oktoberfest in Vernon

Mountain Creek Resort's 42nd Annual Oktoberfest takes place September 19 and 20 from noon to 7 PM.

The event is held at Mountain Creek Resort, 200 Route 94 in Vernon.

General admission is $25, while children six and younger are free.

Visitors can expect German-inspired food, live entertainment, seasonal drinks, games, rides, a petting zoo, and other family activities.

One unusual attraction this year is goat racing.

Vernon also gives you a very different view of North Jersey.

You are surrounded by mountains, outdoor recreation, and more open space than you will find closer to New York City.

It can make for a great fall day trip even if you are not currently considering a move.

Sparta Renaissance Faire

If you are looking for something different, the Sparta Renaissance Faire takes place September 19 and 20 at Camp Sacajawea, 844 White Lake Road in Sparta.

The event runs from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Expect medieval-themed entertainment including knights, performers, crafts, food, games, costumes, and family activities.

Admission is $25 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 through 12.

Children under six are free.

It is one of the more unique fall events happening in Sussex County.

Sussex County Day in Augusta

Sussex County Day takes place Sunday, September 20 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, 37 Plains Road in Augusta.

Admission and parking are free.

The annual community celebration brings together local vendors, businesses, entertainment, exhibits, and family activities.

If you have never spent much time in Sussex County, this is a good opportunity to experience the local culture.

One thing I always tell buyers is that you cannot understand a community only by looking at listings online.

Sometimes you need to spend a few hours there.

Chicken Wings and Beer Festival in Teaneck

Food lovers may want to head to Teaneck on Saturday, September 19.

The Chicken Wings and Beer Festival takes place from noon to 7 PM at the Teaneck Armory, 1799 Teaneck Road.

The event features different styles of chicken wings, local beverages, live music, eating contests, and family activities.

Advance admission is $7.

Admission at the door is $10, and children under five are free.

For anyone exploring Bergen County, Teaneck is also worth walking around while you are there.

Different sections of Bergen County can offer completely different housing, transportation, shopping, and lifestyle options.

Saddle Brook Street Fair and Craft Show

The Saddle Brook Street Fair and Craft Show takes place Sunday, September 20 from 11 AM to 5 PM near Mayhill Street and Market Street.

Admission is free.

More than 100 arts and crafts vendors are expected, along with food, rides, live music, a DJ, and family entertainment.

I like street fairs because they give you a completely different perspective on a town.

You can walk instead of drive.

You see local businesses.

You meet residents.

You get a better feel for the streets and surrounding neighborhoods.

For somebody considering moving into an area, that experience can sometimes tell you more than an afternoon of looking at houses.

FestiFall Street Fair in Westfield

Downtown Westfield hosts FestiFall on Sunday, September 20 from 10 AM to 5 PM.

The downtown area is expected to feature around 150 vendors and artists, food trucks, live entertainment, a beer garden, and a large children's activity area.

Admission is free.

Westfield is known for its walkable downtown, and an event like FestiFall gives you a chance to experience it when the community is active.

Walk around.

Visit some of the businesses.

Grab something to eat.

Explore a few surrounding streets.

That is the kind of research I encourage buyers to do before deciding where they want to live.

Bound Brook Community Day and Food Truck Festival

Bound Brook Community Day takes place Saturday, September 19 at Billian Legion Park, 548 East Main Street.

The event runs from 11 AM to 7 PM and includes food trucks, live music, vendors, and family games.

Fireworks are expected around 7:30 PM.

Admission is free.

Bound Brook is slightly south of what some people consider traditional North Jersey, but it can still make a good fall day trip for families looking for something different.

St. Margaret Parish Carnival in Morristown

The St. Margaret Parish Carnival runs September 18 through September 20 at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 6 Sussex Avenue in Morristown.

The carnival includes midway rides, games, food booths, vendors, and traditional carnival activities.

Entry is free.

Ride tickets and wristbands are available separately.

Morristown itself is also worth exploring while you are there.

The combination of restaurants, shopping, history, train access, and residential neighborhoods gives the area a completely different atmosphere from many surrounding Morris County towns.

North Jersey Events September 23 to September 27, 2026

Riverdale Carnival

The Borough of Riverdale Carnival runs September 23 through September 27 at the National Guard Armory, 107 Newark Pompton Turnpike.

The event includes traditional carnival rides, games, food, and concessions.

Entry is free, while rides and games require tickets.

Riverdale is located close to several Passaic and Morris County communities, making this an easy evening or weekend activity for local families.

Jefferson Day Festival in Oak Ridge

Jefferson Day takes place Saturday, September 26 from 1 PM to 8 PM at the Jefferson Township High School Complex, 1010 Weldon Road in Oak Ridge.

Admission is $5 for ages six and older.

Children under six are free.

Jefferson Township offers a much more suburban and rural environment than places like Clifton, Paterson, Hackensack, Jersey City, or Hoboken.

That is one of the things I enjoy about working throughout North Jersey.

You can drive 20 or 30 minutes and find a completely different lifestyle.

North Jersey Events October 2 to October 4, 2026

Cranford Fall Street Fest

Cranford Fall Street Fest takes place Sunday, October 4 from 11 AM to 5 PM around North Union Avenue and Alden Street.

Admission is free.

The event is expected to include approximately 100 craft and artisan vendors, food trucks, live music, and children's activities.

For 2026, additional fall attractions include a pumpkin patch, seasonal photo areas, and a beer garden.

Cranford is another community where the downtown plays an important role in the overall lifestyle.

If you are considering homes in towns with walkable downtown areas, attending a community event can help you understand what living there might actually feel like.

Hudson County Fair

The Hudson County Fair is scheduled to begin October 2 at James J. Braddock North Hudson County Park.

The event continues into October and features carnival rides, games, food, and family entertainment.

Hudson County offers a completely different lifestyle than the suburban parts of Bergen, Passaic, Morris, or Sussex counties.

Communities such as North Bergen, Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, and West New York can offer more urban living, access to transportation, and closer proximity to New York City.

Hudson County Fair Continues

The Hudson County Fair is expected to continue through the October 9 to October 11 weekend.

If you missed the opening weekend, this gives families another opportunity to visit.

Because carnival schedules and hours can vary, check the latest organizer information before heading to the park.

What Local Events Can Tell You About a Community

When buyers first start searching for a house, most of the conversation revolves around bedrooms, bathrooms, price, taxes, condition, and location.

All of those things matter.

But there is another question that is just as important.

Do you actually like the community?

Paterson does not feel like Wayne.

Clifton does not feel like Ridgewood.

Hoboken does not feel like Sparta.

Go to a street fair.

Walk the downtown.

Visit a park.

Eat at a local restaurant.

See what traffic feels like.

Pay attention to how long it takes to get to work, shopping, schools, recreation, and transportation.

The house is important, but you are buying into everything around the house too.
